I had a snow day today, and decided to look up the meanings and origins of the names of our beloved skylands. Talk about being a skybrarian. Here are my results, and if anyone has any more ideas, I would love to hear them.

Real World Places:
Aleut: Could be named for the Alaskan Aleutian Archipelago.

Arcadia: Arcadia is a common name for towns in the United States and United Kingdom, as well as the name of a few towns in Ireland, The Netherlands, and Spain.

Cidade: There are several cities in Portugal named Cidade, including Cidade, Monção, Portugal and Cidade Caldas da Rainha, Portugal.

Goldenrod: A popular town name in the United States.

Hovlund: If loosely interpreted as Hovland, it is a popular town name in Norway. There is also a Hovland, Minnesota.

Jordan: Jordan is the name of a country in the Middle East.

Leng: Leng is a place in Equatorial Guinea.

Lhasa: Lhasa is the name of a city in China.

Luz: Luz is a fairly common town name in Portugal, as well as the name of a Portugese Island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Midgard: Midgard is a city in Namibia, Africa.

Isla di Pisa: Could be named after Pisa, Italy, and interpreted "The Isle of Pisa" from Isla, Spanish for "island or isle", and di, Italian for "of."

Tortuga: The name of many places worldwide, and historically a haven for pirates. Name could have also been drawn from the island of the same name (which is probably a portrayal of the same island) in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Sharif: Shares part of the name of Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan.

Translations and Meanings:
Alpha Stations: A letter in the phonetic alphabet. Alpha was a skyland in Skyrates 1.0, using the same sprite as Aleut.

Cidade: Portuguese for "city."

Echo, Juliet, and Romeo: Letters in the phonetic alphabet; Echo and Juliet were skylands in Skyrates 1.0.

Grottopolis: From the words Grotto, "small cave," and polis, "city-state," it means "The City of Caves." It can also be interpreted to mean, "Hideaway City."

Luz: Portuguese for "Light."

Shriebeck: If loosely interpreted to the German name Schreibach, it means "Screaming Brook", from the words Schrei, "to scream" or "to cry," and Bach, "brook" or "stream."

Steppe- A vast, semiarid grassland. In this case a play on words due to the skyland's unique shape.

Uurwerk: From the German word "Uhrwerk," meaning "clockwork." Uhrwerk is based on the roots Uhr, "time," and Werk, "work."

Volstoy: Origin unknown. Can be loosely translated to "Good Legacy" from the German words wohl, "well," and Story, "saga."

Mythology and Fiction
Arcadia: A traditional name for a Faery or Fairyland.

Leng: A fictional plateau in The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath by H.P. Lovecraft.

Midgard: The Earth realm in Norse mythology.

I understand that Goldenrod was named after the actor who played C3-PO in Star wars who apparently visited the devs while they were developing the game.

Arcadia is a traditional name for Faery or Fairyland.

Cidade is close to 'Ciudad' which just means 'city' in Portugese.

Anthony Daniels played C3-P0. Tortuga was historically a haven for real world pirates. Fuseli is a spaceship in a webcomic. There is a USS Requin submarine.

If I recall correctly, the Requin is docked at Carnegie Science Center.

Not to get off topic, but Cetacea is the biological order which includes Whales, Porpises, and Dolphins.

EDIT: If I were to ever stick a combat mod on a cetacea I'd call it the "Narwhal"

The Skyland Gonk is likely a reference to the Power Droid from Star Wars.

Ciudad is actually Spanish. Cidade is correct in Portuguese.

Luz actaully means "light" (as in sun-light) in Portuguese.

And I always read Hovlund as Holland... Always thought it would be curious that the country under the sea would become the island over the skies..

Not a skyland, but requin is French for shark and the name of a shark genus that includes sandsharks and the Mako.
