A discussion on the radio has brought attention to a serious issue: the recruitment wars are getting out of hand.

As newcomers are unlikely to have well-developed skyrates sarcasm detectors, when someone asks about factions we need to limit our responses to factual information and refrain from faction bashing, even if done completely tongue-in-cheek.

(I admit that I have done my share of it, but I am going to be more careful from here on).

Thank you for your time.

Specifically, if a newbie is asking about factions, feel free to give them your faction spiel... but then point out that they should ask about the other factions. And that means FS4L, too. Outright telling a newbie that it's impossible (or makes them lame/stupid) to stay in FS is really rude.

Perhaps there needs to be chat at the player creation screen so I can slag off ferrets and boars instead of Reds and Greens?

- PvP

(Seriously, this is all in good fun. Except for actually misinforming n00bs, I don't see the harm.)

As a new Skyrate (joined Feb 27) I've just started considering factions. I happened to cotton on to the Flight School option, but as Major Science pointed out on the radio, newbies are newbies 'cause they don't read much...

Seems to me that if factions are important to game play, all the options ought to be laid out fairly prominently. Trouble is, right now, all sorts of info is scattered between the wiki, the manual, the faq, the forums, and the radio.

I've noticed Kyra and others doing yeoman's work on the wiki and the forums, so there's that (thanks!) but where else might faction facts be put? I know that no matter how many notices you post, lots of folks will never read them, and Major Science's call for reason ought to be the main thrust... but do we want radio proselytizing to be the main way to disseminate faction info?

It has occurred to me that this aspect might add to the game, but I wanted to raise the idea...

Until there are actually REAL benefits/drawbacks to the various factions, I'm afraid that you can't really expect there to be anything more than a lot of radio campaigning for new players to join the various factions. There really aren't facts besides the history documented so far in places like the Skybrary.

When you come to it, joining a faction at this point is like joining a particular school club for no reason other than "they are cool, and I think I fit in". You don't get special lunch privileges, no fancy jackets or pretty outfits, nothing like that.

Well, you get a special chat for your faction of choice. And perhaps an imaginary party hat.

What about a Snowcone? We've got tons of those. ;)

p.s. For the new folks, check out the Dictionary of Skytopia for information on Snowcones.
