Given that Skyrates is on its last leg, Fauxrates is relatively quiet, and the reset is coming soon, I think now is a good time to reveal this outside of Radio.
I've been working on this little project for a couple weeks, now, and I've got a very functional— albeit unfinished— system that's prepared enough at least for initial release. I'll continue working on it in weeks to come, and with special thanks to Vera McFarlane's particular assistance, hopefully I'll manage to get the world actually drawn out and the kinks and missing features figured out. Now, currently, I don't have a dedicated server, and lack control of my router, so I'm stuck working through Hamachi to connect since I've only experimented with TCP/IP connections, so I'll make it real specific how to setup your client, if you plan to get involved.
See, some have heard of MUDs, or other MU**-type games. If not, know that it is effectively terminal/text-based IRC, and will probably remind you of your Command/DOS prompt or equivalent in aesthetic. The primary audience is the roleplayers, but the system is very generic, and could be made to have OOC Worlds as well as IC Worlds of various canons or lack thereof. I intend to recreate Skyrates canon first, and depending on success perhaps expand this for other uses, such as true MUD, for you DnDers, or make a more interesting MUSH environment. Eventually I will release the server software so others may create their own servers, themselves.
So, here goes:

GETTING ACCESS TO THE SkyMUSH SERVER:
    1) Download and install LogMeIn Hamachi 2.1.0.124.
    2) Join network "SkyMUSH", leave the password field blank. If the room is full, "SkyMUSH2", "SkyMUSH3", etc. should be available.
    3) Download Java 6.0 or 7.0 if you don't already have it.
    4) Download my client software and save to wherever.
    5) Run the SkyMUSH.jar file in the folder you extracted in the previous step. You do not need to use a batch file to run it unless you feel like debugging. It is an executable jar file. Simply double-click it.
    6) Click "Connect" and enter "5.195.201.76:25526". If the "connection failed," the server is down. If it "could not communicate," there was an error that I need to address specifically. Otherwise, type "+news Globals", learn how to talk, and start talking. Hopefully you're not alone.

Understand that this is the first time I've left the server up round-clock, so there probably aren't very many users, yet; further that the world is completely unbuilt: This is only the initial release.

Have fun getting used to the interface, at least!
Also, yes, there's a "+g fiesta: (text)" function. Feel free to sparkle up my lame GUI.

Very cool, Maya.

It sounds like fauxrates is going to be sparking up again soonish, although the Skyrates Reset may pacify some of the Core Admin Team for a bit.

Maybe. Also, why is this better than IRC?

Awesome thing you did there, Maya!

Man, just as I'm about to get back into SR's RP, the server's fixing to go poof again.

Oh well, I suppose. Now I can still get in on the action! :D

So, thanks!

Tal, the main upside AFAIK is that Maya's tool has an understanding of a persistent world. It can have rooms and objects with descriptions. It also has an in-game clock. Do those features sound useful for RP?

A MUSH, huh? If you do want a server to run it on (and don't mind losing direct control) I can offer my VPS. I don't doubt others in this community would be more than happy to host it for you as well.

Or you could just go grab a linode for $20/month, but, youknow :P

Assuming direct control, after all, is always nice.

Actually, Vera McFarlane made a similar offer, and I'm tempted to consider the option, but I think for as long as I'm doing such extremely constant development to the server, being root admin might be a near-necessity. I'd be telling you to reinstall the server every five minutes for the next two weeks or so at this rate.

Hamachi works fine in the short term, but I am thankful for the offer, and will take note of it for when I'm prepared to release the server and client as v1.0.

Fair enough!

Just to correct a misconception you seem to have, though: as long as you can handle connecting to remote servers (ssh and suchlike), updating the server is nowhere near that much of a hassle.

It's not that it's seen as a hassle that discourages me. It's not being able to do it myself, given the frequency I'd be doing it, if someone else were hosting.

After toying with this, I've decided to hold out. I would join either a PennMUSH/TinyMUSH/whatever based server, as I know the commands and the scripting language, and can use my heavily scripted client. Or I might be interested in an IRC-based game, for the same reasons.

To people with concerns about IRC games... I played for years on City of Unity, a far future dark earth sci-fi RPG played entirely on IRC. The rooms were persistent and registered, with long descriptions linked to the official website from the topic. The characters had their descriptions in the official forums. If you don't mind a split between the game client and a Web browser, this is the way to go.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. You would be able to do it yourself, and close to trivially.

I tried to run your client but I couldn't see what I was typing (there was no input box like on Skyrates itself)... I got as far as trying to write you a page but that's kind of hard when you're typing blind so I just disconnected. Is there a reason I can't just connect through raw telnet or Trebuchet?

Server move lost half the posts. Current plans, not in any particular order:
    • Obtain a host for the server and a (possibly associated) webpage for the client.
    • Implement Items work as they should be: InventoryObjects.
    • Implement a universal RP-listening system.
    • Implement the Database Editor.
    • Determine if multiple logins are still possible.
    • Fix client display of wrapped lines.
/look (text) not visible, GUI display errors, and missing hyperlink functionality has been dealt with.
