A couple people I have talked with have agreed that we need some mods in the RP channel to direct and or control some of the chaos that goes on. I've seen far too many gunfights and ridiculous god-modding in the past few months and frankly its getting a bit annoying.

yay or nay?

Who would you have as moderators in there?
What would you do if something happened at a time when a moderator isn't online?

Also, in response to a couple of more specific things in your post:

If that's what someone wants to do and they are enjoying it and they're not just randomly shooting other characters who have nothing to do with it then why stop them? It's a hard balance to strike because obviously there are people who don't enjoy that but I would say for the most part there is more time in there when there's no gunplay compared to when there is.

Any examples? I can think of a few but they're all by pretty much by the same two or three people who without the exact quote I would rather not name.

I'm not a fan of totally un-modded RP, but...who will be doing it? The devs have enough on their plates, and I'm not crazy about the idea of them (or anyone else, really) picking out a few players to be Super-Special.

I'm not in RP too much, but I monitor it when I'm online. I'd agree with Taricha, picking players to be mods is a headache. What if we implemented a "warning" system? Get warned by 4 players in a one hour span (or some measurement) and you get banned.

Alternatively, there is an even easier way: /ignore. After asking nicely for someone to stop doing what they're doing, you can type in /ooc WARNING playername, with the convention that if a player receives multiple warnings everyone goes and /ignores said player; whenever a new player comes on someone types /ooc playername BANNED so that the newcomer knows to /ignore said player.

While it's a little cumbersome, if everyone adopts the convention it should run fairly smoothly and with no effort from the devs at all.

I can see problems with that... What if someone logs on with multiple alts and warns once with each? Or if you get a group of people warning - possibly even those who don't RP much.

Folks like The March Hare and Captain Mullet would never be able to use the channel.

Moderation by popular vote just doesn't work on any scale above "Counter Strike".

If you don't like what's going on in RP, why not simply ignore the channel and/or RP somewhere else?

I'm not sure about moderators, but we are looking into ways that chat can be better monitored without someone needing to be there watching everything.

I, for one, welcome our new automechanical moderator overlords. I would like to remind them that, as a trusted internet personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground pixel caves.

This is the path of least resistance I tend to follow. I'd even support the ability to turn off tabs altogether.

You know what I've just seen the logs of the complete foul up that happened in RP last night. We do need mods. No question.

EDITED to remove language. Sorry about that. :fear:

Would you post them so all of us can see?

I would prefer not to for various reasons at the moment. If one of the people who was there and logged it wants to I'd be all for that.

Sorry about that. I suppose it might give some indication of my feeling on the matter. Kinda forgot where I was putting it :-/

I think the community is small and decent enough that you can simply ask people to stop, and of course, /ignore. Mods gets into the whole issue of what are the rules, how does each mod interpret the rules, what sort of actual physical powers mods have, and how much they are expected to meddle... I vote no, no, no.

Sorry guys I went out of town for the weekend and didnt have the ability to clarify anything...

I have no suggestions as for how we moderate or who/what. This was meant more to just see if we need more, better moderation. I agree with the concerns about who would moderate if mods were deemed necessary.

I'm not so sure about this myself. I find when things are bad enough to need mods, people don;t back off.

These problems tend to occur with something random settinng everybody off, so I don;t really see this as being valid.

I vote no on RP mods. I think the community as a whole could use a few mods, but to single out RP for mods would be a bit silly.

Wow, the 'Yes' votes went from a narrow lead to a significant deficit.

Personally, it wouldn't kill us to have some mods about. Ideally, they'd have very passive rolls, just keep down on really excessive foul language, ludicrously inappropriate comments.

My only hesitation is that my tendencies toward "blue" language would probably run me afoul more than most people.
