A few days of prodding at the game's danger levels, and a little fiddling with a geologic modeling program, have generated something containing colors.

Image

Each cross denotes the danger level at its given point. The colors correspond to the general danger level across Skytopia. We learn a few things from this: Alpha 1 is the most dangerous skyland, the core is off center with the bulk of its safe zone around Arcadia, half of the T1 skylands sit at level 5-10, the entire Philli area (including Tortuga) is safer than the core, and danger levels around Getty change quickly. The in-game map is, of course, rather inaccurate.

Oh wow. You get a fair number of my internets for coming up with, then charting the idea of a elevation map. This is also pretty neat.

EDIT: And that's why I get such low combats lately. Huh.

For comparison, this is the overlay used when you click Show Danger:

I do miss the level 70+ combats I'd encounter around Tortuga. Nowadays the max is something like 30. :remygross:

Just was wondering, so I made this (using Alpha 1 and Alpha 10 and guides).

The light spot on the danger map where you think Alpha 1 goes, Calvin, is actually where Grottopolis goes.

Ah! I wondered why the scale seemed off. Thanks.

Yeah, like that.

Pen had some thoughts on the danger map:
Pen wrote:
Pen [Incarnation of Paper]: anyone have the old danger maps stored away to confirm?
Pen [Incarnation of Paper]: oh god, it's 2.3's dange map isn't it
Pen [Incarnation of Paper]: the ultra low dange perfectly maps to groto and the ultra high to tort then
Pen [Incarnation of Paper]: and's the the only round with a center core and a corner groto other than 2.5 and now which are running very different danger maps then this
Pen [Incarnation of Paper]: No! the ghost of 2.3's pirate fleet are coming for revenge!

There was a discussion with Phil in General chat some time back, where he described the server's danger map as a "big skull" which I believe was the map we had in 2.4. I can sorta-kinda see this in Amira's map. If I'm remembering right, in 2.4 we had the starting skylands in the south-east and the capitals in the centre, which would explain the extremely low combat levels found in both locations.

Bump for devvie verification that this is still accurate compared to the in game map. I point people at this fairly regular-like, so I'd like to at least be sure that it's reasonable to do so.

Well, two questions could confirm whether this is easy to fix or not:

1) Is Tortuga currently the "most dangerous" skyland (followed by Grottopolis & Uurwerk)?
2) Is Echo one of the "most safe" skylands?

I'm pretty sure that the in-game danger map is now correct (and has been for at least several months)

Evidence:
1) Encountered low-level combats at Echo
2) Encountered high-level combats at and around Tortuga
3) Code-and-server-wise, it looks right

Can someone confirm that Tortuga is currently the "most dangerous" skyland (followed by Grottopolis & Uurwerk) and that Echo one of the "least dangerous" skylands?
