I delved into the forums and the skybrary once trying to figure this out, and came up empty - who did the original art? The clarity of the visual style is very elegant, and I think there's an especially clever talent at contour thickness. Very cohesive and understated, expressive all the same. I think we all accept it as background and don't give it a lot of thought, but if you back away for a second and relish the work, you realize it's one of the key reasons this world feels so real.

I wholeheartedly second this, not that the Phil the Prettiest needs a second.

Zabrak!, I believe much of the art was done by a mysterious player by the handle of Third. I may be wrong, it has happened once or twice before, but that's what I can recall.

My vote is for character customization, a set of avatars whose colors can be changed to better suit the faction and/or personal style. But not uploadable characters. No, no, no, no, no.

Thanks for the link, Kyra. His abstract art under Paintings is excellent, as well, if anyone wants to check it out.

Okay, some quick color tweaking:

Green Female Boar Avatar, Green Female Boar Sheet
Yellow Female Boar Avatar, Yellow Female Boar Sheet
Blue Female Boar Avatar, Blue Female Boar Sheet

I was having trouble getting the eyes on the faded-out part of the sheet to look right.

I'd also be more than willing to go through and do all of them, this didn't take that long. And then the character creation page could have another choice down below, which color you want.

I'd be happy if I could just have the male bear avi WITHOUT the mascara...makes me look like one of phil's gang going to see 'Rocky Horror Picture Show'.

Heh, I'd like it if the devs use my character's pic for the male Bear's avatar.

I'm all about efficient use of Devs time (since that lets them do more things!). In the grand scheme, I would rather they get to spend time on mechanics oriented development (new combat, missions, etc), but since you can probably allow for lots of customization with not too much extra coding, I'm all for it. I think palette shifting on planes and avatars lets people try a lot of different looks without too much extra work by the devs.

Also, we clearly have some talented and eager artists among us (people in this thread so far, Tommy Chong), so why not tap their talent to save (limited) Dev time? I understand that a game needs to maintain a consistent style guide, but Tommy Chong's "Ticket" mock-ups have shown that players are more than capable to adapting to the skyrates art style. So if we want to go a step further, I would suggest that custom avatars (ie. complete picture replacements, as opposed to palate shifts) be allowed IF they are first submitted to the devs who can yea or nay them, or better yet, suggest how they can be tweaked to be acceptable. This keeps editorial control with the Devs, but lets them tap the creative power of the community. Also, such new avatars could be used by anyone, or, if the person was feeling selfish (shame on you! :worry: ) only a single player.

As for planes, palate shifting of pre-defined areas (wing stripes, etc) would be cool, but seems like more work. Even cooler (and even more work) would be a pre-set area for a wing/faction logo. All the same stuff from above about allowing vetted user-art would apply to those as well.

But to return to my original point (and to answer the actual question posed by the thread), if I could have only one customization feature, I suppose it would be palette shifted avatars (and maybe with diff shifting areas for hair, and primary/secondary clothing color). Plane stuff would be nice, but other players would only ever see it on the map, all small-like. So I favor more publicly visible customization.

Fex

I completely agree. I can understand there being a lot of the same looking planes in the sky, but there is only one me.

It would be nice if we could show off the whole character as well. Right now we only see each other's forum avatars, but I'd like having the whole character visible somewhere, maybe in the profile.

(Note that this is pretty minor, and also somewhat dependent on getting more customizable characters.)

While we're talking about character customization, there are also some species we should probably add in.

I'd love to see some avian and reptilian avatars available, and possibly also some aquatic creatures (octopus, sea turtle, shark maybe?)

There are also some really common mammalian species still missing from the PCs, like equines, and rodents. Ooh, a bat character would be neat. And rabbits and elephants and hedgies and other ungulates and kangaroos!

Birds: Emu/ostrich, crow, bluejay, swans, peacocks/peahens, quail (QUAILMAN!), penguins, storks, flamingos, raptors (eagles/hawks/falcons/etc), doves, parrots, owls, quetzals, hummingbirds, woodpeckers

Reptiles: Snakes might be interesting, especially in how they actually fly. Then there's crocodiles/alligators, lizards, turtles/tortoises as mentioned above. Maybe a species based on Komodo Dragons

And maybe even some amphibians? Frog characters might be neat.

I'm definitely not saying we need all of these, just throwing out ideas. I'd actually suggest doing a poll before adding new species in, and using that as a basis for which species to add.

I am not too concerned about customization of characters and planes, as such a thing just boils down to fancy bells and whistles, not practical functionality. It would be better to invest developmental time into more practical things to add depth to the game, IMO.

I say focus on making a long lasting and efficient engine on the skyrates "car," not to spend time on installing lavish upholstery.
