Click for information on The Unobtainium Project.

Ahoy there, fellow Roleplayers!

I don't think I'm the best Roleplayer, nor do I think anything I do in Roleplay should be considered official canon. I don't think anything done in the Roleplay tab or on the forums would be half as good without the intricate characters that people have taken the time to create and produce for our entertainment.
I don't want to dominate or change the way Skyrates is played or the world that has been so carefully created here - I just want to tell a story.

Skyrates Roleplayers gave me more freedom than I could ever have asked for in The Unobtainium Project, and what came out of it was a very fun, very memorable romp for all involved. I am eternally thankful that despite the obvious technical problems / plausibility such an event may produce, Roleplayers were willing to go along with it simply because it was fun and open-ended in a way that any single person could greatly effect the outcome.

With the permission of the same community, I'd like to wrap up The Unobtainium Project and the story of my character(s) with the sequel and penultimate chapter in the Unobtainium saga that anybody is welcome to participate in in any capacity, large or small.
I fully welcome any Roleplay characters to participate in the overall, growing story, and if anybody else has a problem / doubts about the story itself, I take no offense in them ignoring the arc completely and treating it as if it never happened.
Any and all criticisms are also welcome, as well as any suggestions or queries.
The intention of this Roleplay is, like The Unobtainium Project, to provide a story that can be openly and greatly influenced by the players involved.

"...for a world of peace, there had to be sacrifice..."

The story itself involves a genius, an army, and a threat to the very world of Skytopia as we know it.

After the Unobtainium Project (Blakeman Dean Spencer's plot to destroy the world with an Unobtainium-powered bomb), it became apparent to those close to Blake that he was not operating alone - a higher force orchestrated the events, and has now begun plotting a new revenge against the world to be carried out by he himself.
If you want something done, you gotta do it yourself.
This man, a balding Gorilla, operates under multiple pseudonyms, and as such, his real name is unknown.
His most common title is 'Hector', and there are claims that he is the world's smartest man.

A criminal mastermind, pulling countless cords in Skytopia's criminal underbelly like a fattened spider tugging flies in his web. A madman obsessed with not only himself, but the concept of himself as a God standing over a crumbled, ruined world and rebuilding it in his own image.

There is mystery, intrigue, a network of plans within plans that all lead up to the final confrontation with the future of Skytopia hanging in the balance.
Queue dramatic music. :secret:

"...now, I am become death. The destroyer of worlds."

Currently involved in the plot is Heidenreich (known to some as Isaac), a frighteningly tall Alligator who lives in the sewers beneath the Rotor & Prop skylet.
His affiliation / relationship with Hector is unknown, although it has become apparent that the 'Gator knows what is going down and plays an integral part in the domination of Skytopia.

Also involved is Tom (username: Tomm), who operates a store on the Rotor & Prop skylet just across from the tavern. His involvement is also up for debate.

And of course, Blake Spencer, who was in charge of the original Unobtainium Project.

-------------------- Roleplay begins here --------------------

In a few days, Skytopians who tune in to a wide number of radio frequencies will hear a message, played over and over again for all to hear without any clear signs of stopping.

The voice that speaks is deep, slow and distinct, with an accent that could very well be German / Reichlandish, were it not for such clear annunciation that places it closer to English.

"...These are dark times for Skytopia, there is no denying. Indeed, your world has perhaps faced no greater threat than it does today.
There have, in the past, been invasions, attacks, terrorist plots and assassinations on your soil and in your skies. For many, this has become an expected and accepted way of life.
This day is unlike any Skytopia has seen before, for it marks the beginning of the end, and of a new beginning entirely. Yes, through your innumerable mistakes, your puerile meanderings, your day of reckoning is at hand.

But I say this to our citizenry; The Armada, the Hand, the League, the Order and the Court will no doubt attempt to defend your liberty during this time from the forces that seek to take it from you, as they have always done.
This is a mistake, one for which on this day you shall pay your penance, Skytopia.
This message will serve as my herald, Skytopia - and I challenge any and all of you to try and stop me. I challenge you so that you may fall. Then you can admit that your undoing, your end of days, is the fault of none but your own.

For no matter what your views may be on the subject of liberty, no matter who dares speak aloud of your freedom and beliefs - a Faction, a Governor, a Captain - your independence was forfeit long, long ago.
This is the way your world ends - not with a bang, but with a whisper.
That is where you are standing now - on the fat kindling of past sins.

Empires will fall. Hands will bend. Leagues will disband. Orders will crumble. Courts will divide.
And Skytopia will not survive."

'20160'.

After repeating the message, the number changes.

'20159'.

It's a timer.

Should you wish to be involved, feel free to have your character react in any way you see fit!

This will not be an entirely forum-based RP. Like the original Unobtainium Project, the final encounter / majority of it will take place in the Roleplay tab.

/OOC Oh man! If we weren't just on the coattails of the Blackout Event, I'd love to see this reflected in some in-game-ness (like what we did for that event). As it is, I feel we need to circle up the Roleplay Guides and perhaps get some feedback from the entire community before attempting the next Event. Ah, but that's a post for a different thread.
Best of luck, Blake Spencer! I'll be reading.

Monday, 16th day of the 9th month.
Current timer: '19899'

“They say the captain goes down with the ship, so when the world ends, will God go down with it?”

The radio message continues to play on countless frequencies, the final number growing smaller with each iteration.
Newspapers have, perhaps foolishly, drawn further attention to the ominous warning by running related articles since the recording began.
The atmosphere in Skytopia is shaky, even tense, as most seem to be awaiting a response from the Factions whom this opposing tyrant has so boldly challenged.

The Crimson Armada were the first to issue an official statement.

"Fear not, for your Empire remains strong."

Sturdy words, but without any concrete evidence of where the terrorists may strike from or what their plans for the end of days may be, there is little anybody can do but prepare for the worst.

It is true, though whispered, that pilots and adventurers from around Skytopia are researching the potential threat and preparing for their own assault against these invaders.

While the timer continues to tick, Skytopia's own worst enemy appears to be its very own populace - for panic, fear and heavy mistrust could easily spell the end before the proclaimed 'end' even arrives...

Saturday, 21st day of the 9th month.
Current timer: '11711'

"I don't mind being the world's smartest man... I just wish it wasn't this world."

An outpouring of rebellion has struck the hearts of Skytopian patriots this past week.

Grey Mortand
and Hau Long embarked on a quest to find and destroy the origin of the radio signal coming from the Rotor & Prop skylet - of course, this is only one of many broadcast points, but it's something, and it's a start.

The recurring radio broadcast, whose doomsday timer is now nearing the halfway point, is now weak and broken on the R&P skylet, though as strong as ever in other parts of Skytopia (information has been collected that confirms the signal is strongest in the southern part of the Skylands).

Now both the Azure League and the Emerald Republic have issued statements of their own, though they are similar in tone to that of the previous statement produced by the Armada:

"We are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of our citizens."

Nothing official word has been said of the quiet murmurings that the terrorist group in question have acquired nuclear weapons for use against the beautiful world of Skytopia.

As the clock continues to wind down, and Skytopian stalwarts, rogues and adventurers prepare themselves for whatever is to come, a tense cloud of mistrust and skepticism sweeps the populace.
Some have allied with former foes, others have turned on past friends in fear and anger.

And, despite the noble efforts of those who have attempted to personally but a dent in whatever is on the way, the timer continues to tick.

I feel that it'd be great to have some official reports of faction responses. Perhaps we could get some Dev/RP Guide/democracy input?

Quote:
**Transcribed from an encrypted radio transmission sent to Islo, Lhasa and Fuseli.**
Received 22.09.24— 02:08, 03:08 and 03:38, respectively.

A report concerning Death, the Destroyer of Worlds:
It has come to the attention of those closest to this threat that weapons of mass destruction are located on a mobile platform. We believe that the specifically unobtanium-catalysed nuclear warheads have been mounted on transregional rockets and loaded into a Bismarck owned by Hector, aliased as Professor Cesaro of New Huvland University. The Zeppelin is likely escorted by a fleet of fixed-wing aircraft, specifically of the TOM distribution brand, though no hard evidence yet supports a deliberate relationship between Skytopia's nemesis and this enterprise.
There is speculation that another location, known to some as The Edge of the World, is directly related to this threat; there is no doubt, however, that Hector has at some point in his recent history made use of a certain facility here as an outpost of operations. We presume that there are things to find, either leads or critical operations to delay Hector's holocaust with.

We strongly recommend the immediate increase of high-speed, high-density patrols to prematurely detonate any threatening warheads before their destination is achieved. We caution that such warheads are likely heavily escorted. An early-warning system based upon radar and craft registration would ease the workload of such patrols. Similarly, point defenses ought to be deployed to protect the capitals and core skylands. We believe the fringe sectors are safe from attack. Hector does not want each and every soul dead— only civilisation reset.
It would be advantageous to prepare plans for mass evacuation, decentralised safety zones, ungrounded and low-density standby protocols for air fleets, radiation damage control, redundant hierarchical backups, mass surveillance, long-term ration reservation, and dedicated long-term evacuation transports. These precautions will reduce the damage dealt by Hector's finite supply of weapons. At some point, he will run out, and we will survive in numbers enough to end the threat and begin recovery.

His will is our social collapse.
Do not allow Him to turn us to anarchy.
Skytopia is one.

There is a delay before the signal closes, demonstrating that the transmission has ended gracefully.

Friday, 4th day of the 10th month.
Current timer: '7000'

"History shall be kind to me, for I intend to write it."

The radio broadcasts, now infamous across Skytopia, have begun to grow weak in certain places of the world thanks to the efforts of Skytopian rogues and stalwarts putting up a brave show of defiance against the tyranny that threatens their very existence by destroying the origin points of the transmissions. Two are down, but how many more remain?

At precisely this very moment in time, ten minutes past ten, television sets Skytopia-wide begin to broadcast a single recording...
A man, face hidden by a balaclava and thick, circular spectacles covering his eyes, sits before the camera. His voice is slow and well-enunciated, with an accent that could almost be considered 'German' were his words not so crisp and clear, making it more similar to 'English'.

EDIT: The reason for this being on the television, since hardly anybody owns one, is so that the media will run with it and that, eventually, Skytopia will carry his message for him, rather than having to carry it himself. It's a game of Chinese whispers, essentially.

----------------------------------------

"Skytopia, you will hear my words when I speak.

Your world, as you and the forces that represent you are aware, is a dark, dangerous place to live in.
I ask you this, only this; take a look at your lives, at your characters, at you. How many amongst you can honestly say your lives have not been affected by... pirates, by gunfire, by warfare? How many of you have lost loved ones - spouses, parents, family, children - prematurely, because of forces you couldn't control?

It appears that I can control those forces. I will control them, now, for the sake of the future. For the greater good. It took years and cost a fortune, but... thankfully, I had both.
I will do it because not a single living creature alive today has dared to. This is natural, because we accept the reality of the world with which we are presented.
I choose to change that reality, so that future generations may develop as educated, clean and, most importantly, secure members of a utopian society.
Try to understand, with your primitive, unwashed minds... that every action I take, no matter how violent, I take for the good of Skytopia.

The time has come. You know it in your soul, for I am your soul... You cannot escape me. You are puny, you are small, you are nothing - a hollow shell, a rusty trap that cannot hold me. Smoldering, I burn you - burning you, I flare, hot and bright and fierce and beautiful. You cannot stop me, not with wine nor vows nor the weight of age - you cannot stop me, but still you try. Still you run. You try to drown me out, but your voice is weak.

I believe that, despite your inadequacies, your people deserve to understand why their lives are coming to a collective end.
Because I am generous, because I am fair, I have explained your situation to you all.
The creator has every reason to be outraged. He has given you everything. They are tiny and stupid and vicious but because I can, I listen to them.

If you care for your world, Skytopia, then you will understand why this is the only way."

----------------------------------------

Soon, newspapers and radio stations that have managed to remain on the air will undoubtedly pick up the news of this warning.

And the timer is still ticking...

A new set of repeating broadcasts have been slowly replacing the removed signals, as Hau Long and Grey Mortand have destroyed Hector's many radiotowers. The broadcasts contain, in short, the same contents as the previously encrypted ones sent only to the movers and shakers of Skytopia. They repeat at hourly intervals, twice a piece, preceded and then succeeded by a the universal emergency tone.

Maya Muldrake wrote:

An additional cautionary note:
The Crimson Armada, Azure League, and Earthen Order have proven themselves unresponsive to this threat. After several petitions, no response has come. Do not fool yourself into believing the factions will protect you. Skytopia must save itself, and that means every able-bodied man, woman, and child must participate. Cooperation is key to our survival.

About the time these start sounding off, a certain unobtanium bomb has been dredged some miles off the boundary of the Fuseli airspace. It now sits in the cargo bay of a certain Zeppelin, those words HFS Frederick planted along the side like a monument.

Tuesday, 14th day of the 10th month.
Current timer: '3901'

"Hope in reality is the worst of all evils because it prolongs the torments of man."

The radio timer, dubbed by media outlets as the 'Doomsday Clock', is set to expire on the 18th day of the 10th month, now just four days away.

The denizens of Skytopia have, in their united panic, shown remarkable compassion towards one another in the recent weeks and, through their efforts, have begun to establish a plan to defend themselves against the threat of nuclear holocaust, brought about by he who is said to be the smartest man alive.

Another bomb, long hidden but never forgotten, powered by Enriched Unobtainium and created by Blake Spencer during the original Unobtainium Project has been brought up from the ocean depths and is currently being worked on by members of the Azure League and other scientific-minded individuals - Hau Long and Maya Muldrake among them.
The bomb that was meant to destroy the world so many years ago may just prove to be the last, best hope for Skytopia's survival - to be detonated far outside the boundaries, to hit Hector before he hits us.

"It took years and cost a fortune. Thankfully, I had both."

Though a formidable adversary in his own right, Hector is not alone in his plight; Heidenreich, his stalwart Alligator general, has rallied an army of reptiles from his homeland to fight back against the perceived oppression of their kind, so that lizard-kind may dominate over mammals, a reversal of roles in the beautiful Skylands.
Each reptile has been provided with an Ingersoll aircraft, and it is believed that these creatures will provide a crushing wall to allow Hector's nuclear weapons a clear passage.
But this army will not go unopposed.

The five factions have let their respective governors know of the current situation (at the time of writing, there are no Independent governors, though any of these would be spoken to in person), and they in turn have begun to evacuate their peoples so that the world of Skytopia may provide an open battleground for the final encounter.
Those who choose to remain will fight for their liberty and the right to live - the Armada at the forefront, providing ample opposition for Heidenreich's reptile forces.

May the best side win.

:dead:

-------------------- OOC Discussion --------------------

The event will begin this Friday, server-time, and hopefully conclude within one or two days.
It is an open roleplay event that anybody may participate in under any capacity, and effect the outcome as much as they are able.
Nothing is set in stone.

There are no restrictions except for those imposed by regular Roleplay courtesy.

Thus far, I genuinely wish to thank everybody involved for their support and input, both of which have been beyond what I could have ever expected.
Well done, all!

As a side, I do believe that music forms quite a nice bit of atmosphere, so here follows a small selection of themes I have compiled to get you 'in the mood'.
I've spent many months compiling this after having written the event, not choosing them at random or willy-nilly on the spur of the moment, and for lyrics as much as genre of music - these have been selected patiently and carefully, because I believe they draw genuine comparisons to the event itself. However they were not chosen for being period-accurate, so please forgive me for that.
If you don't like any of them, feel free to yell and scream at me via personal message. :cheeky:
I can't wait to see what you guys are able to do this Friday - it's going to be awesome!

Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Theme of Hector (Chosen Version)
Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Original version
Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Old School version, for purists of the setting
All Along the Watchtower - Edge of the World
Pruit Igoe & Prophecies - The Radio Message / Plan to Retaliate (No Lyrics)
Drown in You - The Doomsday Clock
Hail to the King - The Final Event
Three on Three - Hector Arrives, Skytopia Fights Back (No Lyrics)
This Is Is Is Is Pain - Mammals vs. Reptiles
Azmodan - Heidenreich (No Lyrics)
My Way - Blake & Hector
Calling to the Night - A World in Ruin
Come Back - Aftermath

This may just be the single most delayed post in the history of this forum.

Still, I've been meaning to post a very heartfelt 'thank you' to all those who were involved in this, and for the immense fun we (at the very least, I) had. It wrapped up well enough, and it got a tremendous number of people online and in the Roleplay tab at once.
But since I suck at 'heartfelt', I'll just say 'thanks'.

It's comforting, even encouraging, to know that Skyrates can come together as a community to form a long-running, coherent storyline to be enjoyed by all. Be proud, guys - I'm proud of you.
...For what that's worth. :secret:

-------------------- In-Character wrap-up --------------------

Time: Unknown
Date: Unknown

The denizens of Skytopia (and, in some cases, the invading reptiles as well) count their losses, thankful that the threat of nuclear annihilation has been evaded for the foreseeable future.

For one Blakeman Spencer, a token funeral is held. There is nothing to bury.
The Last Will and Testament grants Maya Muldrake full ownership of the dwindling Excelsior Energy Corporation Transfactional, as well as the company HQ on Midgard. There is also mention of a leather book, though this book is nowhere to be found.
Richard Cussler is left a colt python with the word 'Rena' emblazoned. How this particular weapon came to be returned goes unmentioned.
Tabris Schiller is given The Comedian II, the Thunderbolt that Blake allowed Schiller to use during the final firefight against Hector's warship.
Dusty Skiff and Ollieander Copper are left a single piece of property on the R&P Skylet, jokingly referred to as 'the Blakecave'. Should they search long enough, they will undoubtedly find Blake's entire arsenal and history buried deep within the secret cellar. It is theirs to use as they see fit.
Nesseun Frost is gifted with a tattered photograph of herself from several long years ago, along with a single word printed on clean paper: 'Sorry.' She has been left with enough ExCorp funds to set her affairs in order and live peacefully, should she so choose.
Rudolf Fahrenheit receives a dirty old pair of black boxing gloves. Their significance is anyone's guess, though the simple fact that Rudolf was left anything at all may come as a surprise.
Nadya Zobovic is mentioned, though nothing is left to her directly, and is the final name on the list. It seems that Blake was unable to finish writing his Will by the time he kicked the proverbial bucket. What he intended to leave Nadya is unknown.

--------------------

Location: Midgard
Time: Late Afternoon

A man stands by a simplistic grave at the back of Excelsior Energy Corp. HQ, staring down in silence. The name on the stone is bold and clean: 'Morgan Bantex'.

The man kneels down, laying a small, glowing-green trophy at the base of the tombstone. After a few more moments there, he finally speaks.
"...I'm sorry, ki-- Morgan." Another silence. "...I'm leaving this place for one a little less complicated. I've taken so much life... I think I'll try to create some." A short, suppressed sniff. "...Thanks, champ."
He rises again, a hunched back not taking away from his enormous bulk.

The figure dons a pair of aviators and begins to walk away, stopping only when the meager grave is a blur in the distance. He raises a large feline paw, waving goodbye.

Farewell, friend.

Pffft, HF was longer prolly.

But really, nice outro to the whole thing, pity I wasn't quite as in on it as I'd liked to be. (AGAIN)

Was truly wonderful, GG.
