(from Nero Shade, edited by Chesterfield Taft)

Thousands of men, women, and children gathered, all to hear Matriarch Clara. She stood on a large platform so that all could see her, but not so high as to separate herself from the people. There was no cheering as she gripped the pulpit before her. There was only silence. She looked at the expansive crowd, a long slow gesture that brought tears to her eyes. She took a moment to wipe them away before straightening up and speaking.

“I am so overcome with the faith of our people. As the Earthen Order's appointed guide in Skytopia, I brought the message of Magnus' light to you all, and I find it returned a hundred fold. We have been called by Magnus to face this challenge, trusting in him, to show that even though we are small, we have the full might of the righteous on our side.

“You all have been organized, and given assignments, that will provide the best way to reach the Barrens safely. I cannot say that you will be safe, but I have faith that you will be watched over.

“I only have one more thing to say, as I know there is little time to spare. Thank you. Most of you are not from the Barrens, and I can know very well what it feels like to leave your home to go serve another. Thank you. Your sacrifice will not go unnoticed.”

"Those of you wishing to heed the call, there are stations around the square to take your name and to prepare you for the coming journey. Go to them, state your purpose, and may Magnus' breath carry you."

[OOC: This is the opening of the Earthen Order's storyline. Brown Faction members (as well as potentially those from out of faction, including Independent) may choose to join with the Earthen Order's transport caravan to head to the Barrens and protect it from the Fleet. You may now use this space to roleplay your characters thoughts as they stand about the square, or head to one of the stations to sign up for the journey to the Barrens. Earthen Orderites who do not go will have the chance to continue doing things in Skytopia]

He had only been there to drop off supplies from another job, but after hearing the call that had even the loaders piling into the square, Jay had to see what was up. He stood near the back, next to the disgruntled dingo female that was his mechanic while listening to the speech; and she already knew what he was going to say by the time the crowd started dispersing.

"I guess we'll be staying around here a little longer." the tabby announced with a convinced nod.

There it was. Sighing, Myung-Ja Park glared at her boss. "We did what we came for and we're not gettin' paid for this."

"We could."

"We won't. I know you. You won't even bother talkin' to 'em about commission for an escort. And they won't consider it because you won't say a thing."

"It's not like we'll be broke from it either, M.J." Jay argued. "Remember? Hidden Fleet scrap are good money. Imagine how much we'd make salvaging that kind of stuff when this is over."

M.J. sighed again. It was true, but she knew he was just trying to justify things in a way that would get her to shut up. She wanted to punch him; but kept her temper in check. If they were going to do this, a swollen eye would not help his vision too much. On the other hand, at least the fighting would keep things interesting. So long as there was a bit of adventure and profit to go with it, the mechanic would go along for the ride. Still, she was clearly annoyed. "You and your stupid dreams." she grumbled.

Jay smiled as he started walking ahead of her back to his Vengeance. "Hey, dreams are important. It wouldn't do to have the H.F. shooting down theirs when they have little else."

[OOC] Lord Gilbert, could we maybe get the RP posts from the EO Second Decision inserted into this thread, or should we just cut'n'paste?

Nero Jr. and his assistant stood in the crowd as Clara spoke to the people of Lhasa. They did so because Nero had heard of the request for help from the Barrens and gained permission to go if he would be allowed by the Order. But there he stood, knowing well the effect the charisma of the Matriarch would have upon her people. He had after all spent some considerable time with her when she had first arrived.

"Sir," Borin said, "The refurbishing of the Black Acorn II is finished. We should be able to make the flight and provide great aid to this venture."

"Good." Nero Jr. said. He looked around to see the reaction Matriarch Clara had on the people. He wasn't surprised to see a couple independents scrambling to join the fight, neither was he surprised to see a few people staring at him. He was dressed in his official Crimson Armada uniform after all.

"Sir, I still don't understand. Are we going to help or spy?"

Nero was shocked, he hadn't expected to hear that from Borin. "To help of course!" He exclaimed, then said in a lower voice, "But it was made pretty clear from our superiors that if we come across any useful information it wouldn't hurt to report it. We are not here as official representatives though. We are here as good friends to the Matriarch and have chosen to volunteer for this."

Borin nodded and seemed satisfied.

Nero and Borin then walked back to the large black kingfisher, sending a runner to do all the paperwork for them. This was going to be a tough flight, and Nero hoped he would return to see his wife and son once again.

Cardinal Lance, feeling lighter without his formal brown robe, approaches a group of professors from the Earthen Sanctuary. He tugs at his flight jacket while speaking to the gaggle.

"This adventure seems to have enough leaders, so I feel no need to go in any official capacity. But I can't imagine missing this opportunity. Sign me up for service wherever the Chancellor needs the most help."

Turbo hopes the quiver in his voice conveys excitement rather than nervousness. Turbo wants to take the present opportunity at face value but can not shake the feeling that this is all too good to be true. He had always assumed that his dream of visiting Alcuin's Citadel would go unfulfilled.

"i just hope there is something left to see", he mutters to himself.

The Chancellor is cleverly disguised as one of the professors: he looks just like a grizzled older lynx aviator, flight jacket, tough fabric pants with a multitude of pockets, beaded vest and white shirt, headgear and goggles currently raised. The Earthen Sanctuary's insignia on his jacket collar is the only thing to betray his position. "Ah! Good of you to join us, Cardinal, but I really can't agree with you about 'enough leaders'."

He gestures toward the students lined up at the station in front of a resigned-looking Miss Felonious Drake. "I have a feeling the promises of 'extra credit', 'free food, fuel and ammo', and the opportunity to visit a far-off locale have drawn a bit more than the few I expected to sign up." He taps his thickly furred chin. "In the skies, it doesn't take long for one pirate to slip past your escort and ruin your day. And these lot, some have never fought a pirate, let alone the Hidden Fleet. What do you think, should we try to talk some into staying home and helping with our defense? Or figure that we can teach 'em what they need to know?"

OOC: This happens in the Earthen Sanctuary, the college on Lhasa, after the Chancellor receives the notice from Matriarch Clara that calls people to support aiding our brethren in the Barrens.

Quote:
The grizzled old lynx cleared his throat, looked down from the podium at the sea of young, bright-eyed faces.

"So much has happened in so little time, my friends. First the Reds claimed Lhasa, and then they were forced by the attacks of the Hidden Fleet to withdraw their forces to defend all Skytopia. Indeed, the Earthen Order was restored to play its own part in this crisis. We have restored peace, and we have rebuilt our skylands' infrastructure. Daily, we help the refugees cast adrift by these mysterious attacks."

"I'm proud of all of you students who have played your parts, sacrificing your free time to volunteer in the infirmaries and in the workshops. Whether your neighbors followed Brown or Blue or Red or Green or Purple mattered less than that they needed your help."

"But now others have requested our help, from an entirely different quarter. And more, they have threatened ancient institutes of learning, of great historical and archaeological signficance! I am thus calling for volunteers for an extramural expedition to the Barrens -- to Alcuin's Citadel, specifically. You will receive academic credit for participation, of course -- nothing teaches like experience -- but I will not lie, there will be risk to life and limb should you choose to join the Earthen Order fleet on its way there. As such, there will be a limited number of slots, and I will be personally supervising this expedition from the Wee Beastie." He named the great Kingfisher that was the latest incarnation of the students' perpetual striving to improve on classic aircrafts - sometimes disastrous strivings, more often perplexing than entirely beneficial.

"Remember, this is not the only quarter that requires our attention. We daily continue to protect Skytopia from the Hidden Fleet's attacks, and make sense of their mysterious signals and motives. But if we can learn more from the Barrens as to what drives their attacks there, that may aid our struggle and hopefully, give us clues as to how we can end their threat entirely."

"Signups for the Alcuin's Citadel expedition will remain open for the next few days before we depart. Please consider your decision carefully, and should you have guardians, you will need to obtain their signature on the release form before you can proceed into what is, for all intent and purposes, a war zone."

Secretary Felonious Drake rolled her eyes. As if all of Skytopia wasn't a war zone already! Still, as the Chancellor concluded his speech, she sat behind her table at the back of the room, handing out flyers. "Yes, there'll be radio contact. No, food and ammo will be provided, but you should keep a survival kit on hand just in case you get separated. Yes, you can bring your own planes, we'll provide in-air refueling..."

Clara descended from the platform flanked by young attendants on each side. She nodded genially towards those she passed as she made her way near one of the large barges that the Order had constructed.

Similar to what the Order had used for their initial crossing, these great airships were lighter and faster. This time, the travelers knew that civilization and resupplying were on the horizon and would not have to pack for every possible contingency. Although, Clara noted sadly, they would still need to prepare for quite a few of them. The barges were outfitted with several cabins, although most of the interior was being used to carry the planes of those heading to the Barrens. Space was tight though, so planes would be constantly shifting duty from garaged in the airship, to patrolling the space around the voyagers.

Clara smiled at Gatsby, "Your services, should you provide them, will be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure what we'll be able to offer you as payment, but you are welcome to take anything that you salvage."

She then turned towards a group of young students fresh from the University. She beamed with pride to see them making the journey, but a small part of her heart ached to see them potentially walking into danger. Clara looked at them, and the older Orderites around them, "Magnus bless all of you."

The casually dressed Turbo looks around the group of students and professors to see who was going to take the initiative. But many faces he met were returning the same expectant look in his direction.

The still-Cardinal sighed and gave Chancellor Lynx a furtive look that said "I guess you were right about needing leaders still"

Turning to Clara, Turbo speaks aloud
"And may he continue to bless you Your Eminence. You will see we have many volunteers eager to begin this trek. Some come with concern for the barrens, some with deep faith and most with a lot of curiosity. Others will be staying here to defend the still-recovering skylands but they are not lacking in curiosity either and certainly look forward to tales of the barrens and of our journey itself."

Turbo glances toward the barge nearby and asks,
" So, um, when can we begin? and how long is the journey?"

The Chancellor adds in a low whisper for Cardinal Turbo Lance's ears, "Are we there yet? Mommy, make him stop hitting me!"

Humor of course, but even crew used to flights lasting most of a day might grow restive on a journey that's weeks or months. The lynx drifts off to talk to some of the experienced monks to discuss their strategies for avoiding going stir crazy on their long journey from the Barrens to Skytopia. If their methods involve a lot of reading, sermons, and prayer, we're really going to have our work cut out for us.

A small group of pilots can be seen off to the side of the square, dressed in motley pilot's uniforms. Each of the pilots has a sheep's head sown somewhere on there sleeve, or on the front of their jacket. Upon hearing Cardinal Lance stepping forward, Grey nodded to himself. "Right, and that's our cue to start the defense, methinks." he mutters, then looks over at Sloth. "You think we need to stick around, talk to people? Or should we just fade?"

The characteristic thump of his walking stick heralds the arrival of Reverend Standfast. His wiry form moves through the crowd like a small force of nature, occasionally thwapping aside those who won't move out of his way quickly enough. He ambles towards the group near Matriarch Clara and the transport barges. His eyes scan across those gathered before him, and while they still bear their usual harshness, his thickly accented voice is possessed by an uncharacteristic...warmth.

"Blessings upon ye all, chosen of Magnus. Those of ye choosin' to make the pilgrimage to the Barrens will surely be rewarded. What ye do is the mark of fine citizens. A shinin' example to those who do not yet accept the light of the Order."

Turbo Lance wrote:
" So, um, when can we begin? and how long is the journey?"

"We'll be shipping off shortly I imagine. There be no use dilly dallying around when there's work to be done."

At the second question, he paused for a moment, eyes closed, his lips moving slightly as he went deep in thought, "It would take a little less than 3 days travel as the Junker flies."

Matriarch Clara interjected gently, "Regrettably, we won't be able to take quite so direct a route, nor would we be able to maintain that speed."

Standfast nodded, "Aye. I'd estimate it will take us closer to 5 days travel, barring any unforeseen circumstances."

At the blanching of one of the students, he chuckled and prodded the youth's stomach with his cane, "Let not fear of claustrophobia, boredom, or any other ail put you off young one. I've been part of many a crossing and 5 days will pass like nothin'. Be thankful this is not a missionary expedition, where our only indication of how long the trip could be is the amount of food carried aboard."

Clara nodded, a rueful smile on her face, "When we lifted off from the Barrens, we headed in a direction with no idea if we would ever find land. All we knew is that we would go until our a third of our food had run out, then we would turn around and try again."

The Reverend nodded gravely, "Not interestin' work, but twas good work. Work that brought us here, and that brought you all the word of citizenship."

Standfast took notice of the smaller conversation going on nearby. He fixes a curious gaze on Grey.

"Ye're intending to guard the homefront in Skytopia, are ye not?"

Sloth looks at Grey, an odd look on his face. "I...think I'd like to stick around for awhile. I have an odd feeling that this is going to be an event that people around here will talk about for quite awhile, this leaving." He then grins broadly and leans in, unable to resist, saying "I heard that there's going to be some hors d'euvre's at some point. I could use-"

His sentence is interrupted as the Reverend turns his attention towards them. Quickly dropping his smirk, he nods to Grey.

"Yes, Reverend. There are still skylands that need our help, the Fleet's not giving up easily." He hesitates a moment, thinking, before he says, "Besides, this isn't my journey." He bows slightly to the Reverend and smiles. "Good luck."

Awkwardly shifting his sore right shoulder under the lab coat, Grey nods as well. "We'll make sure you have a place to come back to, Reverend. The damages to the allied fleet in the liberation of Tehras should be completely repaired by tomorrow, and then..." He glances over at Sloth and then at Cardinal Lance. "I believe we have our marching orders. Aye, good luck in your journey."

Gatzby was a little surprised with being addressed, but did his best not to show it. Instead, he stopped walking long enough to give the matriarch a warm smile and nod. "It's the thought that counts m'am. We--"

The tabby was immediately cut off when his mechanic passed behind him, making sure to give him a swift slap upside the back of the head. Grimacing and glaring after her, Jay then turned his attention back to Clara, his smile turning a little more awkward as he blushed mildly. "The...salvage should be enough. If there's anything we at No Borders can do in the future, please don't hesitate to call."

"Indeed, I feel much more comfortable heading out to the barrens knowing that the Black Sheep and other special forces will remain behind to continue the work of freeing Fleet-controlled skylands here."

OOC: logistically, it'd make more sense to Lynx to have the larger planes like the Kingfisher be flying alongside the dirigibles, saving the hangar space for smaller planes, and some of the planes'd be carrying fuel for in-air resupply of the others. Am I incorrect?

"Five days, eh? Not as bad as I was thinking." Lynx nods to the Matriarch and the Reverend. "I'll speak with the faculty, see about keeping people busy and get them up to speed for whatever we're facing."

He drifts back toward Cardinal Lance to discuss his plans. "I'm thinking start with the basic checklist - keeping your plane in top condition's going to be a lot more important out in the middle of the empty than when you're not more than minutes from a skyland where you can stop and repair. Some patrols, divide students up into brass and silver teams as aggressors/defenders, load 'em up with tracer ammo to cut down on actual damage. And maybe a late afternoon indoor Grimby tournament?

"At night, we should see if we can get the monks to talk about the Barrens. Get an idea of where we're going and what we'll be facing when we get there."

He looks toward Gatzby and Nero Shade and the other experienced-looking Skyrates joining up. Maybe they'd be willing to volunteer with the skirmishes - they've certainly seen a lot more action.

After personally inspecting his plane The Black Acorn, a large Kingfisher customized for long air travel, Nero headed back to the group of Orderites, hopeing to see Matriarch Clara and other Order leaders.

He was pleased his hopes were not in vain and he respectfully apraoched the Matriarch, dressed not in his Crimson Armada uniform, but in a traditional Arcadian garb. "Magnus shine on you and yours Matriarch Clara." He said in adressing the Order's leader in Skytopia. "I come not as an offical representitive of the Crimson Armada, but as one of your first friends in this land. Being a chaplain and anthropologist I understand the importance of perserving and protecting the cultral and religous gems that we have so few of in this land. My crew are not fighters, but we offer our skills of flying and the sturdy wings of The Black Acorn. I spent my own money to out fit it as a refuel carrier, and we should be able to stay in the air the whole trip to the Barrens with fuel to spare to other planes if need be. I also have spent more of my personal money for fuel, food, and weapons should you need them."

"Blessings on you Nero, your charity is greatly appreciated."

OOC: Yes, bigger planes like the Kingfisher likely will accompany.

Question for people interested in pursuing this RP. Any interest on RPing part of the time spent on the journey? As in, we perhaps do one general post for 'the journey' rather than the 5 actual days, play a bit in there, and then move to the Barrens?
