The distinctive clouds and winds that always preceded the Fleet's arrival had come to Islo. The sky was turning an inky black, colored occasionally by a sickly yellow. Bolts of lightning would streak across the sky, coupled with the grim sound of thunder.

A call went out on Islo's announcement system.

The Fleet was on the horizon.

The Horizon might be out of range, but that wasn't much of an issue. Even in wartime, it was poorly equipped for warfare, and it was too dangerous to deploy it into a battle, aircraft launch capabilities or no.

But that hardly hampered the mobility of those who helped organize and direct the League's war efforts.

A trio dark grey Kingfishers laden with radar and radio equipment ominously orbited the Tower-Skyland at varying heights and distances, monitoring the growing situation. Apart from a few splashes of colour in the form of yellow prop tips, dull blue paint and clearly visible League badges, they could easily be mistaken for being in the employ of the Fleet.

One of them contained the self-titled Militia Commander Haley Callahan. If her bloodlust had it's way, she'd be ready to dive into the thick of the fight, but as it was, she needed to be watching from the sky for this one. An organized defense would be paramount to winning the battle, and for that, they needed a plan.

A plan they didn't have yet.

But they'd think of something.

They always did.

The roar of engines tuned with the rumbling thunder as a black colored and white 'pearl' adorned Leviathan crawled through the airspace surrounding Islo. Its sides bristled as gun crews retracted side plating for their weapon mounts to be extended. Artillery weapons traversed their lanes of fire to test their coverage while supporting AA crews manned their nests that lie embedded along the spine, sides, and belly of the warship.

Lower bay doors retracted, three fighters free falling before coming to life and climbing back up into the heavens where they flew close to their mother vessel. Avengers painted a deep ocean blue and tipped with silver paint on their wings and tails. Deployed and ready for the first battle between the hidden foes and their precious home, all the crew and pilots could do now was wait and watch with a leery eye on the horizon.

Duxe himself knew that firepower alone wouldn't allot to much of anything if he didn't know what to shoot at first. While he acted as a wall to try and stem the tide, he hoped whatever delay he could give would be the time needed for Islo to come up with something, the 'turn-of-the-tide' idea, plan, or invention to assist in beating back this incoming horde. Standing next to his map-table, looking at the pins and small figurines representing the movements of Skytopians, he placed one Leviathan next to Islo where he had collected a few other craft as the call for an assembly went out. Nomads, scientists, and whomever else made up the league. They weren't an army, but they sure as {static} weren't going to be steamrolled over either.

Its grey-and-white paint scheme congruous to the scudding cloudlines into which it sailed, the Feral Unicorn found itself at the vanguard of an ad-hoc squadron of smaller planes. Gunnar tripped the local comm circuit:

"Unicorn to trailing craft. Fair warning; am carrying electromagnetic equipment. If close, expect possible brief loss of radar, radio undt directional kit, over."

As one, the others broke off as if they'd already been fired upon. The giraffe chuckled, then switched frequency.

"Islo Defense, Unicorn: will follow first wave in. Militia Commander Haley should be aware EM package ist aboard. Over."

Without waiting for a response, he brought the Kingfisher around and throttled back, settling in behind the still-gathering first assault wave...

Gunner entered the hanger and motioned for his current navigator Felonious Inko (for some reason unknown to him, his crew had a rather high turnover rate) to come with him as he headed to his plane. His plane was the Gunslinger a older Vengeance that looked as if it had seen its better days. The plane itself was in good shape but as Gunner didn't care much for appearances it was painted in a variety of different shades of the color blue. This had happened over time, a replacement wing here, new armor plates there, all painted in whatever blue paint happened to be on hand. After performing the pre-flight checks the Gunslinger taxied out onto the runway and took off. From here it took its place in the makeshift perimeter defense of planes circling the skyland.

The Crazy Little Donkey lumbers airborne looking exactly as ramshackle as it isn't. Burrito Loco checks his sights one last time as the well oiled machine moves to engage in more aerial struggle.

Emerging from the darkness, a flight wing of several X-36s made there way towards Islo. They flickered through the clouds, turning back and forth in an erratic pattern inspiring nausea in those unfamiliar with their distinctive flight pattern.

From behind, a great peal of thunder and lightning announced the appearance of one of the slow moving platforms. As it came into view, the scouts could see its enormous cannons prepared to fire.

Klaxons blared as the 'Black Pearl's radar 'blipped' the incoming bogeys on screens scrutinized by technicians. Duxe moves to the lower portion of his integrated bridge into the very hull of the Leviathan he commanded. Taking a pair of battered field glasses from many combats into hand, be brought the eyepieces up to his eyes and focused in on the targets at hand. He gave a scowl at the erratic formations of the coded X-36's.

Rather than make the first, perhaps fatal, move and engaging the enemy directly with brute force. Duxe hung the field glasses on his neck and turned to his navigator.

"Nelly, swing the 'Pearl' -90, raise to 9th bubble and hold steady."

The female weasel nodded and quickly spun the five foot tall bronze lacquered navigation wheel counter-clockwise. The guttural put-puts of the mounted displacement engines were drowned out from the thunder approaching the the closer sets of powerplants that pushed the lumbering Leviathan forward.

Duxe assumed command near his map-table, arranging figurines of known allies in the airspace around them to match what was happening outside the reinforced windows.

"Comm station!"

"Reporting,sir!"

"Contact League defenders that bogeys have been spotted in sector E-7 in concurrent display of Islo in sector A-1. Range-"

"3500 meters and closing sir!" Radioed the forward observer,

"speed-" he continued, unaltered by the wave of information given to him while he described the message.

"Estimating 550 kph" sounded off the forward observer again,

"heading- ",

"South by southwest!" the observer finished.

"Please advise," Duxe finished as his comm station quickly sent the message via morse, signal lamp, and secure radio channels (as far as they knew were secure from the fleet communications) "On course of action, rocket salvo's are prepped but awaiting signal for release. Contact range is-"

"1500 meters!"

"1500 meters. Any closer than that and the rockets might hit our own fleet. BP0844 awaiting orders, out."

Message sent all Duxe could do now was wait. The trio of 'Strikers', the 'Pearls' guardian Avengers buzzed by the bridge as they kept a close CAP (combat air patrol) to their mother ship.

Now with 200% more Creeps than other leading brands!

A short respite... enough to devise basic anti-platform/anti-carrier tactics. Fighters would engage first and draw away the X-36s, allowing Bombers to make runs and disable the weapons and launch facilities, if any. From there, strikes to destroy the four propellors on each corner of the platform would do the rest of the work for them. They had bigger concerns than killing them, for now, and a crippled or disarmed foe can't fight well.

This plan had been relayed moments before the arrival of the X-36s, and hopefully, they wouldn't have heard the important parts.

The three AWACS/Command-and-Control Kingfishers continued their slow orbits. Radio gear warmed up, and the order was given.

"Stand fast and stick to the plan, people! Let's make these jerks regret ever showing their faces here."

Terrance sighs as Islo just comes into view. His latest mission had left him exhausted, not that the numbnuts behind him was hard to capture, but that he had done nothing but whined since he picked him up in Midgard. Then glancing at his radar he notices the activity, he peers ahead and sees the blue colored planes in formation and the approach of the towers. Then with a sideways grin he shouts back at his mechanic, "Take the duck tape of whatshisface's mouth, Home's under attack and we ain't gonna stand by and let it just happen. But get a bucket, not only do I want him chocking off his own vomit but I just cleaned the floor in there. With that He hit the afterburner and his Thunderbolt's engines roared to their full potential as the "Deagle" moves in to support Terrance's friends.

As the wave of X-36's, the 'Black Pearls' sides and dorsal came to life with flashes and chatters and resonating booms. Tracers streaked while puffs of flak abounded in the air in proximity to the zeppelin warship. Its guardian Avengers all broke formation to seek out the targets harassing their home with uncharacteristically sound weapons fire. Already the stationary zeppelin was stitched with bullet holes where armor piercing rounds tore through skin and its first layer of armor.

"Skipper! Bogey's passing starboard batteries and entering overlaps on dorsal side. *thump* *thump* *thump*

"Section three, reports minor punctures in armor plating"

"Striker Two, angle left and lead bogey into field of fire A1 on 'Pearls' bow. "

Duxe stared at the map, listening to the chatter going on around him. He would personally love to take his own Avenger out into the skies, though his people needed him their on the bridge and give guidance whenever needed. Looking at his map he pulled out a red dry-erase marker from its clip on the tables side, drawing a red ring in the incoming area where the platform was headed.

"Helm, port -45 degrees. Raise bubble to 11."

"Comm, send message to gun-line. Roll out heavies and wait for initial rocket salvo before firing at will. Target is the incoming platform. Range-"

"2500 meters"

"Elevation-"

"5-5 degrees"

"Deflection-"

"FO reports deflection is 45 mils"

"Understood comm, send report to gunline and wait until the platform is within 1500 yards. Then fire rockets to signal gun-line to commence bombardment. HE shells"

The new order was passed as the battle got underway. Right now there was very little Duxe could do to assist the others in holding off the Hidden Fleet with his meager trio of fighters and his zeppelin a sitting target for the incoming platform. His thoughts being, if he could distract the platform long enough with some kind of artillery barrage, it might give the others a chance to close in and find a weak spot to attack.

Duxe grabbed the table to steady himself as a vigorous concussion shook the 'Black Pearl'. Looking up at the display of the Levithan, Duxe watched red lights appear on three of his engines and an entire section of armor change from green to a ill fated orange, he wondered who on the engineering team managed to flip the switches and at least let him know their appraisal on the damaged sections. Already there were reports of assembled med teams moving about the ship, caring for wounded and moving any dead out of the way. Such is the fate of a zeppelin captain to watch, issue orders, and hope for the best.

The ground force and the air fleets were managing to handle the X-36's well. A few allied planes suffered some critical blows, but they managed to make their way down to the Islo hangar's safely.

The air filled with electricity and sound whenever the floating platform's cannon readied itself to fire. Great salvos of death routinely shot forth from it, as the nomad pilots did all they could to avoid getting in its sights.

A low rolling thunder rolled through the sky as that same sound was echoed a dozen times. From the cloud banks, the rest of the Fleet began to arrive.

A static filled transmission on League frequencies came over each radio.

"Attention Islo defense fleet. This is Dashte Kavir in the tower HQ. Communication trouble, {static} intermittent. Our air defense guns are operational, {static} believe the cannons on the platforms might outrange us. If they get close enough, {static} do some serious-"

A streak shot from the platform and impacted near the top of Islo. A heavy rumble sounded after, the cannon's retort finally reaching pilot's ears. Dust and smoke billowed around the tower, flames glowing against the dark sky. Anti-aircraft fire from the Hidden Fleet platform intensified, driving back the small amount of planes currently attacking it. Coughing could be heard over the radio.

"Shot landed...floor below. Need to disable that platform." Other urgent voices in the HQ could be heard across the radio speaking to Kavir. "Rest of Fleet will attack if {static} tower open. Need a defense wing to hold them back {static] an assault wing disables the platform that's firing on us." More thunder echoed across the sky as two more cannon rounds hit the tower. "Too much smoke, evacuating HQ. Transfer {much static} control Kingfishers." The sound of a mic being dropped and more coughing could be heard before the transmission cut out.

50% More Tower Types!

"Come on people, get your acts together!" Haley almost fumed as she watched the battle outside, unable to intervene directly for the time being. "Take out the guns! Strike the props and drop the jerks into the ocean! Hit it hard and fast!"

The radio clicked off again. She glanced at the other officers with her, who weren't sure whether to run and hide or snap to attention. "Don't just stand there! Get on your radios and help coordinate things!"

Haley flicked her radio on again and switched to the shared frequency for the command craft and it's escorts. "Command Wing, be ready for close engagement. Form on Alpha 1, prep port guns for counter-battery fire on the platform."

Sure enough, the three craft peeled off from the tower and formed up, with "Alpha 1" - not the Command Kingfisher - taking point. Heavy armour and smaller side profile would handle the worst the Platform could throw at them, leaving it down to the side-mounted howitzers to do some real damage. The guns rumbled as they fired the first volley, then another, intent on making the Platform repay it's assaults on Islo twice over... at the very least. The adapted and modified cargo holds of all three craft were more than enough to allow them the firepower to all to get in on the action, so the Command KF wouldn't be too obvious a target amongst them either.

The Emir's plane rocketed through the air, leading a small contingent of fast flyers to send waves of artillery down on isolated Fleet planes.

Dalhoum radioed down to the tower, "Callahan! Keep up the communication! The enemy has the numeric advantage, we need to make sure we stay tight and stay focused!"

His eyes darted towards the huge wave of slowly advancing platforms.

"Eye of the desert...never so many..."

He cursed again and quickly sent out another broadcast, "We need to stop or stall that fleet before they get near Islo. I have an idea but I will need support. Who's with me?"

Juhanah's ears perked up at the sound of Dalhoum's voice over her radio. She leaned to the right in her cockpit, operating the hydraulic system and radio with her hands and steering with her knees. “Emir, this is Juhanah with the strike wing. We're making headway against the platform, you can expect us in place...” she drifted off as her eye caught an oil pressure gauge. “Magnus, I need three arms.” She keyed the radio again. “Expect us in place for your plan shortly, whatever it is.”

She reached above her and flipped switches, engaging the redundant oil pumps. Maneuvering her Valkyrie, she rejoined the formation, off the tail of three Kingfishers. She watched as the large craft poured fire into the platform's engines. Smoke started streaming from the Hidden Fleet monstrosity, and Juhanah's heart lifted. She keyed her radio again. “Assault wing, lets make a strafing run to finish it off.” Before any replies could be made, a barrage of canon fire issued forth from the platform. Streaks shot through the formation, and planes began to lurch as they were hit. Juhanah watched as a Kittyhawk took a direct hit, disintegrating almost immediately. She looked to her right where the lead Kingfisher was now belching fire from its hold.

Almost as soon are the barrage began, it ceased. Internal explosions on the platform blew off large pieces. One gigantic propeller spun off its crankshaft, falling away and splashing into the sea below. The platform listed heavily, and it began sinking lower in the sky. Cheers went up over the radio as pilots reformed and turned back to Islo. In the distance, X-36's could be seen swarming over the Azure League planes left to defend the tower.

Ryan had flown back to Islo from where he'd been trading in the Core as soon as he'd heard the League's distress signal. There hadn't been enough time to get back to Islo to join the official strike team; as Islo came into sight it looked like a giant, smoking beehive that had just been kicked. Even before he got close, he could make out the huge platforms approaching Islo and the large mass of planes, probably led by Emir Dalhoum between them and Islo, although the smaller X-36 class planes were doing plenty of damage on that front.

Accelerating he closed in on Islo proper. If he wasn't part of the coordinated attack out there, he'd probably just get in the way, he thought to himself. Instead he directed his plane towards Islo and kept his eyes peeled for any planes with an X-36 on their 6. It didn't take him long to spot one trailing a Vengeance. Sliding in behind it and decelerating a bit, he let fire with his howitzers ripping the plane neatly in half. Accelerating he flew past the Vengeance looking for a new target. He saw some Nomads belching smoke making their way for the runway. He hoped they'd make it, but he didn't have too much time to waste as he'd picked up an X-36 on his own tail.

First, he pulled up on his throttle and aimed for Islo's pinnacle. The X-36 took a few seconds to adjust and fell that much farther behind, but was still giving chase: perfect, he thought. Cresting the top of Islo, he pointed the Pariah's nose towards the ocean and let gravity pull the plane down before revving up the props to max speed. He was almost halfway down Islo before he spotted the X-36 as a small dot coming over the top of Islo. Now was the time. He raised a protector flap and flipped a switch labeled "Smoke;" smoke flares popped out of the back of his plane with a loud *snap* *snap* *snap*. A few moments later, as he reached the base of Islo, he pulled up tight again pulling the plane close up under the tower's base. Then he pulled around in wide arc bringing him back facing the direction he had come from, and finally finished it with an airbrake, going only slight over stall speed. Any second now, he thought to himself. Sure enough, a few moments later the X-36 splashed through the wall of smoke, clearly outlining his flight path. Ryan didn't hesitate to fall in right behind the X-36, letting his guns blaze again. These planes had superior firepower and technology but they lacked the skill, brains, and creativity of a Skytopian pilot, that was for sure. It was only moments before the X-36 was breaking up and heading ocean side.

As Ryan turned back towards the mass of X-36's still attacking Islo and the larger mass of the League ships farther away, he had a bad feeling about it all. He put his thoughts behind him, sighed, and headed back into the fray. One plane at a time, he thought to himself, just stay focused.

I have nothing to say here

The mood aboard the Command KF was far different from outside. The Commander's grim determination was broken only by a wide, almost maniacal smile as the platform tore itself to pieces from the inside. Support officers continued to coordinate the smaller groups, somehow managing to keep the ragtag fleet in cohesion despite the odds.

Then, the silence was interrupted by a radio transmission.

"Command this is Alpha 1, we're hit bad but the fire is under control and the magazines are secure."

"Copy Alpha 1, but with a breach like that, another hit will probably tear off the tail."
Curt. Practical. She'd seen the hit, and knew the firepower of the platforms already. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how bad the damage would be.

"Ma'am with all due res—"

"Save the 'we can handle ourselves' talk for another day, you boys are no use to us dead. Head back for repairs, now! That's an order, understand?"

"Yes ma'am. Returning to the tower for repairs."
The damaged Kingfisher broke off from the group and headed back, the trail of fire gradually giving way to only smoke as the crew contained the situation.

"Fast craft move back with Alpha 1 and reinforce the tower's defensive perimeters, remaining slow and heavy craft move up, hold the area here and prepare for the next wave! Move it people!"

Emerging from seemingly beneath Islo skyland itself, a single Hidden Ring flew its hiccuping path into the sky. Flanked on either side by X-36's, it began to tail Ryan's aircraft.
