Skylight is an extension for the Chrome web browser. It gives you a new, light-weight, flash-free, laptop-friendly way to have a chat and keep track of your Skyrates.

What does it do?

Here are (outdated) screenshots, click to embiggen:

Also have these:

Why would I want that?

This is the answer I had for that when I made this extension, 2 weeks ago:
Kathryn wrote:
Because you want to have a chat without melting your lap. Because the radio scrollbar ain't been treating you right. Because you want to be alerted to new combats, without using up the battery you'll need to fight them. Because Skyrates needs moar cowbell. Because your computer's fan gives your dog the heebie-jeebies. Because you want to know exactly how many pirates you have on your dance card. Because with no volume control, the Skyrates alarm bell is all RRRIINNG!!!!! THE BUILDING IS ON FIRE!!!! AHAHAHAHAAA MADE YOU JUMP!!!!

Since then, Marquis has done his thing, and now Skyrates fries your eggs a lot less quickly. Still, Skylight has no idle CPU load. That's a lot cooler than even a frozen Skyrates.

How does it work?

Skylight connects to my server, which connects to the game server on your behalf, and passes along chat messages and other events and alerts. All without the need for flash.

Will it work for me?

Not if you don't use Chrome. Also, your firewall/router/proxy will need to allow outgoing connections to port 8086, if that means anything to you.

Any other reason why I wouldn't want to use it?

The usual warnings about installing extensions apply. I could for instance hijack your Skyrates session and make your character buy lots of fish, or say rude things about Thorne on the radio. I won't, but I could. So think twice if you really don't like fish.

How do I install it?

With ease, from the Chrome Web Store.

Works great on Chrome! :remylove:

Doesn't work on Safari for me. It just shows a big, blank, blue area.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Safari 5.0.3.

Oooh, this is excellent.

One modification, if I might request it: could you set it to block the messages you're typing from the pop-up, as this seems slightly redundant?

Neat. Any particular reason it has to be proxied through your website?

I'm guessing this has something to do with the alleged "Flight School faction chat".

Could you have a look in the javascript console and PM me the error message there? Don't worry and don't bother if you don't know how to do that.

I will do this thing for you, Mahmoth.

The javascript in the extension can't do the type of direct connection the game server needs.

Ha, look at that. Orange and yellow had a secret faction chat all along. I'll block that, and maybe see about hiding the tabs.

Ah, yes, that sense-makes. I wonder if you'd be able to package up the server code so we could run it through our own servers...

Or the devs could give us an HTML or WebSocket API :P

Thanks again for getting me back on Radio!

Could I please have a "Lost connection" bell/notification? Sometimes I think people are being awfully quiet, and then I click over and see the client has lost its connection and I didn't notice.

When it happened to me, I was in another room, so I didn't actually see it happen. But one thing I noticed, though, was that I had two more combats than before I had left the room, so maybe the combat notifier has something to do with it.

Thank you for the nice comments.

You're seeing a Chrome bug. The more extensions you have installed, and the more frequently they're updated, the more often you'll have this happen. I'll probably give them a while to fix the bug before I think about a workaround.

Anything for you, Eskay. I'll push out an update soon, with that included.

By the way, with this forum arrangement, feel free to start a new thread if you want to make a suggestion or report a problem.

As of about six hours ago (and still), my Skylight can't connect. The Flash client appears to connect fine.

Edit: A further six hours later (without intermediate testing), the problem seems to have gone away.

Trying to disable the popup notifications in chrome proved sort of awkward; I found the options menu in the client, but the options on the popups themselves are...weird. I figured "disable" would disable the popups (it disables the app), and the "settings" button brings you to a chrome menu about disabling desktop notifications (disabling them didn't remove the popups though) It may just be the options chrome puts on all the desktop notifications or something though, it was just odd imo.

Updated yesterday. Here's a taste:

Wow, those are all kinds of broken. I can reliably crash Chrome with that menu.

'Fraid so.

I like the new update! I can see my queue, clearer than on the regular client! (Even if less of it at once.)

Blarg, stupid internet connection broke my post halfway through posting, I think it's lost.
So, short version:
You're super awesome for making this.
You should extend this one step further to make an iphone/android compatible version and or app. (I'd buy it!)
Incorporating lurker into it would be pretty cool - tab up to see chats from before you arrived, for instance.
You're mega cool awesome neato.
