Fuseli, Islo, and I were all born after the Upheaval.

Magnus.

He came to us. When we raised up angry voices, he calmed us with his words. When we raised our arms against him, he advanced upon us with his armies. When we fled from him, he sought us out to return us to his lands.

He offered us an opportunity, when no other was coming. He gave us a place, when no other would keep us. We had lived in barbarism, and he showed us civilization.

Under his rule we acquired culture, technology, art. Our disparate races worked hand in hand, all to please him and to create a bountiful world for us all to live in.

The Kingdom of Magnus.

But not all listened to our King. Some saw our peace as merely bending to the yoke of a new master, one who would subjugate our prime wills to his bidding. These barbarians, who previously had fought one another, now had a common cause upon which to focus their ire.

They raided our technology. Killed our people. Fought us tooth and nail.

But we worked together. United under a glorious banner, the once infertile land turned green with life, our own great architecture rising to the sky.

Together, we triumphed, and peace reigned, with Magnus its guardian.

But, for all his glory and wisdom, Magnus was mortal.

We mourned the passing of our great king as one mourns one's patriarch. He had delivered us from darkness, and before us the darkness again stretched.

Magnus had four children, and to them he divided his kingdom so that each might rule their part with thought, generosity, and justice, and together they would ensure the safety of their people.

But the children, whether wishing to achieve their father's greatness, trying to appease their own satisfactions, or working in the interest of their own people, struck out against one another, and the Kingdom of Magnus, now divided, found itself again at war.

The once bountiful land grew charred and twisted with the haze of war. The air was peppered with the burn of gunpowder and the tang of blood. War machines dragged themselves across the earth as the sky was shadowed by deadly aircraft.

Then from the darkness, our old enemy, not beaten but merely bested, emerged forth to strike once again in our moment of weakness.

Magnus' offspring, too late realized the folly of their ways. In the coming years, anarchy would again rule our land. Former enemies were forced into uneasy alliances that would break again at the barest breath of an insult. Faced with our old enemy, we were crippled by our oldest enemy, or base and bestial natures.

The children, as though now unsure whether they should seek to save their land or to take land from others turned back and forth in the tides of war. Their researchers and artistans turned their minds from civilization and architecture, and began to discover the methods of war.

In the dark and brooding summer, we discovered Unobtanium.

We had reached the end of the war, although what that end could be, few could tell. The children of Magnus faced those who had rejected him so long ago. Our defenses breached, the Deniers came forth with weapons we had thought beyond their capabilities. The children suspected a traitor, one amongst themselves who had sought to ally with the fury.

Weapons fired across the capital. The hum of powerful machines and machinations, followed by a stillness, and then chaos, rocked the foundations of the earth itself.

And then it happened.

The very earth shuddered, as though itself appalled at the events unfolding.

Silence, pervaded only by the sound of distant thunder.

And then anarchy again, as the ground heaved and rocked, rejecting all upon it. Flashes of green light shooting forth from cracks within the surface of the earth, new tremors breaking apart the soil, consuming the oceans, and flooding the valleys.

The screams and cries as entire cities collapsed into the earth, to then be silenced as the sea rushed to fill the gaping void.

The seat of power, where the Children and the Defiers made war was sundered, entire armies swallowed up into the hoary darkness, the jewel of our civilization ravaged, the very legacy of Magnus silenced.

And in that ghostly silence, as the sea made graveyards of most of our lands, the dark silhouette of mountains rose forth from the earth to perch with the stars themselves.

Those few shattered communities that had held onto these mountains of air, filled the emptiness with their cries. They had watched, as the world below them was swallowed up, to be replaced with an oblivion of endless blue.

They wept for their families, their people, and their land. They accused one another, each side claiming itself the innocent, each other the guilty. The cursed each other, if anything just to have their voices push away the silence that crowded them on all sides.

And in this upheaval, the Kingdom of Magnus was silenced.

Wow, Thank you Empress for sharing this knowledge.

I need to review my history to see why I thought the leaders of the different factions were present at the Great Upheaval.

By the way, I note that the Empress belongs to the Flight School Faction.

That is just a mislabeling. My allegiance, naturally is to the Merchant Guild and Green.

Hearhear!

Also, wmdaniel-- she is our Guildmistress, not an Empress. We're a Republic, not an Empire.

My heartfelt apologies to Mistress Elisna and to all the people of the People's Republic of the Green Nation.

I never did get an answer about what year we are in. Since the great upheaval was 200 years ago, we are now in about year 200 AU.
